Understanding Taxi Fares in Wallonia:
What You Need to Know

We advise members to ask their local authority without delay to adapt the rates, with particular emphasis on the application of the flat-rate supplement for night journeys of at least 2.90 euros: this supplement is essential to meet current social requirements regarding night work for drivers.

Effective date

The decree on the new maximum prices comes into force on the 10th day after its publication on 24/11, that is, on December 4, 2022.

Definitions:

“night races”: races for which the customer is picked up between 10 p.m. and 6 a.m.;
“the perimeter”: delimited area within which the return of the taxi to its parking place is not taken into account;
in localities where the perimeter regime is not applied:
“Tariff I”: the simple tariff charged when the customer does not abandon the vehicle and is returned to their starting point;
“Tariff II”: the tariff charged when the customer abandons the vehicle and it is returned empty to its point of departure, which cannot be higher than double Tariff I.
in localities where the perimeter regime is applied:
Tariff I”: the simple tariff practiced within the perimeter.
“Tariff II”: the tariff applied when the vehicle leaves the perimeter unless the customer, not abandoning the vehicle, is brought back to any point located inside the perimeter, which cannot be higher than double the Tariff

The new maximum prices:

1° in localities where the perimeter regime is not applied

The maximum prices, including tip and value added tax, for the transport of people by taxis are set as follows:

the amount of support: 3.00 euros;
the kilometer price: 1.55 euros per kilometer charged;
waiting costs: 37.00 euros per hour;
the flat rate supplement for night races: 2.90 euros.
The journey can be counted from the departure from the garage or parking place until the return to the same place. The empty journey is made by the shortest route.
Tariff I or Tariff II is applied depending on whether the customer abandons the vehicle or not. The driver checks the customer's intentions before triggering the higher tariff.

2° in localities where the perimeter regime is applied (Charleroi, Liège)

The maximum prices, including tip and value added tax, for the transport of people by taxis are set as follows:

amount of support: 2.80 euros;
kilometer price: 1.90 euros per kilometer charged;
waiting fees: 37.00 euros per hour;
flat rate supplement for night races: 2.90 euros.
The journey can be counted from the time the customer is picked up until the customer drops off inside the perimeter. If the customer drops off outside the perimeter, the return to the perimeter can be counted, with the empty return being made by the shortest route.
When the vehicle leaves the perimeter, the rate is at most double the rate charged inside the perimeter, unless the customer, not abandoning the vehicle, is returned to any point located inside the perimeter.
For the application of this paragraph, the driver activates the higher rate control device when leaving the perimeter and ensures, before activation, the customer's final destination.
The amount of the support entitles you to home pick-up within a radius of 2,000 meters from the operator's nearest parking lot.

Requests for exemptions

The Minister may grant exceptions to the maximum prices to take into account local circumstances.
Requests for exemption are addressed to the Directorate of the Public Service of Wallonia Mobility and Infrastructure and contain the following data:

the name and address of the applicant;
current and requested rates;
the reasons for the request for exemption as well as the numerical justification;
the annual accounts of the representative companies for the last three financial years and the operating accounts of the division concerned.
The Minister shall decide on the exemption within sixty days.

Trade discounts

The operator may grant commercial discounts to the customer if these comply with the maximum rates set out in this decree or in a municipal regulation.
